Light Container: A Unique Residential House Design by Shu Lan Ho

Creating Exquisite Dialogues with Light

Inspired by the flow and poetry of light, Shu Lan Ho's Light Container is a residential house design that breaks away from traditional straight lines. With its distinct spatial pattern and emphasis on natural elements, this design offers a unique and inviting living space.

The Light Container project, completed in March 2015 in Taichung City, Taiwan, spans 148 square meters. The main concept behind this design was to use a cross axis to segment the spaces, avoiding straight lines. The living room and dining room, located in opposite directions, create distinct boundaries while maintaining a harmonious connection.

The entrance of the Light Container features dark wooden covers, creating a natural and soothing ambiance. Inside, the living room continues the wooden theme on the ground, while the main walls are adorned with marble stones in mild and tender colors. The clean and white carved stone pieces at the bottom add a touch of elegance. The grayish green sofa further enhances the natural atmosphere of the space, while the ceiling windows allow glimpses of the surrounding tree shrews, blending the interior and exterior seamlessly.

One of the design's unique features is the integration of light throughout the entire space. Light serves as the connecting element, creating a sense of coherence and warmth. Elm covers sprinkle the wooden floor, adding a tender and blooming touch. The dining room, with its slightly transparent white color scheme, utilizes linear segments and ceiling lights to establish a spatial axis. The kitchen island, seamlessly integrated with tawny tables and cupboards, maintains a fluid flow. Additionally, a multifunctional indoor slide door can be closed to create a more defined space.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, the Light Container design successfully extends wooden surfaces along the central axis of the space. Indirect lights and dim recessed lamps add an elegant and tranquil texture, reminiscent of traveling through a time tunnel. The main bedroom features a moderate color tone that harmonizes with the calm interior, while low-key silky lighted sheets enhance the overall tranquility and elegance.

Recognized for its innovative approach, the Light Container design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Light Container design contributes to improving the quality of life, making the world a better place.

Shu Lan Ho's Light Container is a testament to the power of light and its ability to create exquisite dialogues within a living space. By breaking away from traditional straight lines and embracing natural elements, this residential house design offers a unique and inviting environment that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.
